A Dash of Nice Things

The other night, something beautiful happened. I was taking Kava out before bedtime, and we were standing in the grass next to my apartment. It was very peaceful and still, and everything smelled so fresh. She and I were both looking north, and you could begin to hear the rain coming in. Like a curtain, we watched it fall closer to us — inch by inch. All of a sudden, it fell on us. We ran back to the staircase at the same pace as the rain was moving forward. Something about it was magical.

Something happened today that was less magical, but was still wonderful. I swear, people, it’s the simple things that make me happiest. I was driving to measure a house that we’re going to list at our real estate company. As mandatory when I’m driving, my windows were down and the radio was loud. “Tom’s Diner” by Suzanne Vega and DNA came on, and I was immediately ecstatic. You know, it’s that song that, like, in 1993 they turned into an I Dream of Jeanie commercial on Nick-At-Nite. Ugh, yes you remember…the commerical parody went like this:

“I am sitting on the sofa.
There’s a TV in the corner.
I am watching Major Nelson;
he is played by Larry Hagman.
And he rubs a little bottle,
and out pops Barbara Eden.
But she couldn’t show her belly button!
All she does is blink!
Da Da Da Da Da Da-Da Da
Da Da Da Da Da Da-Da Da!”

Well, anyway. I’m grooving to this song, and I receive a text message from my best friend, Allyson. It says, “104.1 now!”

It’s good to know that your friends always have your best jamming interest at heart.

PS - Allyson followed with a text saying, “She couldn’t show her belly button, c’mon!” It’s like she reads my mind.
