Can’t Cut These Catholic Roots

First Communion
Any Catholics in the house?  Let me hear y’all say, “Body of Christ!”

Okay, seriously. As you loyal readers know, I was raised Catholic as Catholic can be. I don’t really practice Catholicism and haven’t since I was about 15. However, I surely hold on to the tradition.

I was driving home from getting my brakes fixed the other week, and I was wondering why the nice old mechanic and his wife kept telling me that I was such a nice girl. I know I’m polite and a pretty good conversationalist…but they were really emphasizing the niceness. I took a look around my Toyota 4Runner and found my answer.

Saint Christopher
Hanging from the rear view mirror is my antique Saint Christopher medallion. Ol’ St. Chris is the patron saint of travel…and one of the Fourteen Holy Helpers. I got it from my dad, who had it hanging from all of his rear view mirrors for as long as I can remember. My dad had gotten it from either his dad or his grandpa. I’m checking on it.

Holy Mother
Look down from the rear view mirror, and you’ll see my Holy Mother pendant…sitting right next to the world’s smallest screwdriver. Please, excuse the crustiness of my gear shift.

Lamb of God
Stuck to my visor is my saint card of Jesus, shepherding his flock. The Bible is really into metaphors.

I didn’t realize the high volume of religious items that monopolize the front half of my car. Don’t let it fool you, though. I’m no angel.
